This double-disc 2014 three-fer from BGO collects the three albums the adventurous jazz-rock trio Back Door released for Warner between 1972 and 1974. A rare group where the bassist was placed directly at the center -- there was no guitarist, just bassist Colin Hodgkinson (who also sang), keyboardist/saxophonist Ron Aspery, and drummer Tony Hicks -- Back Door got progressively slicker and more commercial as they progressed, possibly because their 1972 self-titled album was proudly dense, an instrumental record that didn't stretch out. No one track was over four minutes, as the group preferred percolating, spiky ideas that were simultaneously enthralling and alienating. For 8th Street Nites in 1973, they retained a portion of this attitude but Cream/Mountain producer Felix Pappalardi also coaxed them into performing longer, elastic, blues-based jams, sometimes with Hodgkinson taking a vocal lead. Although Pappalardi is nowhere to be found, Another Fine Mess follows this path even further, along with introducing a heavy dose of studio gloss and Fender Rhodes; it's closer to straight-ahead jazz fusion than the other three discs here. None of these records were hits but they're all curious, sometimes compelling, justifying whatever cult they've earned over the years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
