  • When this album was recorded in 1957, Bing Crosby was on his fourth decade as an American pop music icon. Nevertheless, he was still going strong and still had it in him to try something new and different. BING WITH A BEAT pairs Crosby with Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band for a hefty helping of swinging standards with a strong Dixieland flavor. At once a novel idea as well as a return to his jazz roots, this session remains one of Crosby's most consistent albums and has long been a favorite among fans and collectors. It is easy to see why--the record resonates with a feeling of adventure that is sometimes lacking on Crosby's more typical pop recordings, and the contrast between his trademark laid-back phrasing and a swinging band makes for a heady mixture. From Paul Whiteman's "Whispering", which dates back to the very beginning of Bing's career, to "Mack the Knife," then a recent hit that Bing sings with a nod to Louis Armstrong, the album was clearly a fun one for Crosby to make. Decades later, it is still fun to hear.
