Performer Notes
  • Liner Note Author: Paul Lester.
  • If David Bowie was the thinking person's standard-bearer of British glam rock, Sweet were the regular guy's champions of glam. There was nothing the tiniest bit subtle about Sweet's walloping drums, massive vocal choruses, or overdriven guitar riffs, and their stage costumes set new standards for gleeful tackiness (well, at least on the weeks when Slade didn't take home that trophy). But Brian Connolly's gloriously mannered vocals, Andy Scott's extra-crunchy guitar, and the band's shameless swagger made Sweet one of the biggest acts of the '70s in the U.K., delivering superb guilty-pleasure rock that was full of fire, energy, and hooks (the latter supplied by the group's managers and frequent songwriters, Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who knew how to fuse bubblegum melodies with hard rock guitar figures). In their glory days, Sweet were the musical equivalent of a triple-decker cheeseburger with a big side of fries -- not a sophisticated taste, but inarguably tasty and satisfying. Blockbuster! The Best of Sweet essentially lives up to its title, featuring the biggest and best of the group's Chapman/Chinn hits, as well as some samplings of their more subtle and adventurous work (though as sincere as it may have sounded, any band whose members could sing "You're Not Wrong for Loving Me" with straight faces must have had their tongues firmly in cheek). If this only goes so deep into the Sweet catalog and skims the hits rather than digging for obscurities, ultimately that's the job of another set -- if you want Sweet at their biggest and most bombastic (and how many folks really want them any other way?), this set should be just your cup of glitter. ~ Mark Deming
