For a long time, La Bolduc, whose real name was Mary Travers, was the voice and one of the icons of Francophone Canada throughout the 1930s. This double-CD collects some of her output during that decade (overall she was extremely prolific). The rhythms of all her songs were based on dances like jigs and reels, over which she sang in a fast style most modern dancehall reggae artists would envy. But in each piece was some turlutte, the tricky mouth music style she could manage with absolute ease. Behind her was piano, and outings -- from Travers herself -- on fiddle, harmonica, or jaw harp, showed that she was much more than a singer. She exemplified the Quebecois at a time when being French made one a minority that might not exist too much longer. For all her influence and importance, there's a sense of fun and joy about this material, as there should be, given the album's title. She might be little known today in the Anglo world, but her importance in Canada certainly shouldn't be underestimated. ~ Chris Nickson
