  • This 1973 release by the jazz saxophonist Gato Barbieri found the maverick musician turning from his previous experiments with free jazz to embrace his Latin American roots. An Argentine, Barbieri excelled at fusing the sensibilities of North and South America. He does so here, yet the emphasis is on traditional instrumentation and feel. Latin rhythms, and the presence of wooden flutes, bomba drums, and charangos, keep the album rooted in Latin American soil as Barbieri pulls for the sky with his inspired playing.
