Performer Notes
  • Audio Mixer: Brian Foote.
  • Recording information: 2011.
  • Photographer: Angel Ceballos.
  • For her third album, Zola Jesus' Nika Roza Danilova sheds more of the dark, lo-fi trappings that marked early work such as The Spoils. Working with co-producer Brian Foote (Nudge) and the drummer from her live band, Nick Johnson, Danilova makes Conatus a crystalline, complex showcase for her vocal and composing prowess. Tracks such as the frosty single "Vessel" and "Seekir" flirt with synth pop, "Swords" and "Shimmer" lean toward experimental electronica, and "Avalanche"'s luminous organ returns to the basics of her music. Zola Jesus remains as demanding and fascinating as ever, even as Danilova's range expands.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Stretching a baroque, husky Russian-American voice over tracks that cover up the disco in black crepe paper, the 22-year-old Wisconsin native comes on like Florence Welch doing hemlock shots."

Spin (p.76) - "[T]he whole spooky spectacle is still very much her own, still bewitching, still ample reason to get cloaked up. Another victory for California girls."

Magnet (p.60) - "[I]t's Danilova's soaring alto vocals that drive CONATUS."

CMJ - "She's able to weave dark, seemingly tangible labyrinth-like spaces through haunting vocals and eerie atmospheric instrumentals..."

Uncut (magazine) (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]er opera-schooled vocal now finds itself centre stage....[The album] boasts a largely electronic backdrop..."

Uncut (magazine) (p.20) - Ranked #38 in Spin's 'The Top 40 Albums Of 2011' -- "[T]his is an acutely intuitive record that resonates deep in your bones."
