Performer Notes
  • H.I.M. (Finland): Ville Valo (vocals); Mikko "Linde" Lindstr?m (guitar); Emerson Burton (keyboards); Mikko "Mig?" Paananen (bass guitar); Gas (drums).
  • Audio Mixer: Tim Palmer.
  • Recording information: The Paramour Mansion, Los Angeles, CA.
  • Photographer: Ralf Strathmann.
  • Dark Light's polished production probably has Finnish goth-rock outfit H.I.M.'s like-minded countrymen spinning in their daytime coffins. While their peers tend to indulge in more earthy (not to say deafening) music-making methods, H.I.M.'s pristine washes of keyboards sound dangerously sunny on the sparkling "Wings of a Butterfly," while the gorgeously romantic title track wouldn't sound out of place on an old episode of Buffy. Glossy and user-friendly, H.I.M. are the gentler (if not kinder) side of devil worship.

this album has a very different sound to HIM's previous albums.
although this album is quite good and has some good songs such as 'killing lonliness' & 'wings of a butterfly', i would have to say that this album is probably my least favourite, with not as many memorable songs.
i still recommend this album because i think some people may enjoy it.

love love love this HIM album! has so many wicked tracks on it, including the track that got me into them in the first place, killing loneliness. many of their songs have a really nice haunting element to them, and you can find something new in them with each listen, which is a real treat. also great is the track rip out the wings of a butterfly. an excellent cd!

They've changed their directions a bit in this album since this was gonna be their mainstream international "breaking America" album so it does have that mainstream appeal. The tunes are not as heavy as before and Valo's singing has turned softer too but it's quite a cool album in its own unique way. It took me a while to get used to it but after several plays, you do get addicted to songs like Under the rose and Killing lonliness.

This is yet another change in H I M's path, they seem ot constantly change styles and it always seems to turn out a few hits form each album, this album on the other hand is practically great from start to finish, its got a lot of awesome songs, rip out the wings of a butterfly being my favourite,. an excellent addition to the collection

Hardcore fans of HIM may be disappointed by this album because of its more 'mainstream" sounds but Don't let them be the judge of this album. Tunes like under the rose, Killing lonliness and Play dead makes this album quite a unique HIM album which is just as good as their other albums. This album explores the beautiful vocal melodies of Ville Valo and really shows off his singing skills like in Wings of a butterfly. Peopel may not say that it is not dark enougg to be called Dark light but the lyrics really justify the album's name. I think it's a great album if you are open minded to different sounds.

the first few times i listened to this c.d i wasn't really impressed at all, the c.d seemed to be a step down from H.I.M's usual standard. A friend from Finland recommended i read the book Dark Light by Mette Newth to fully understand the album. I read the book and now i understand what all the hype is about with the album. To fully appreciate the album you should read the book either before or while listening to the album. i now love the album as much as their past albums
