Sai Ghose is an excellent modern mainstream pianist who has developed his own voice within straight-ahead jazz. He enjoys writing songs that are a bit tricky, often in their rhythms or time signatures. For this set, his music is uplifted by the presence of the forceful tenor-saxophonist Sean Berry, who sometimes recalls Michael Brecker a little and adds a lot of fire to the performances. The quartet performs seven Ghose originals plus an effective version of "Black Orpheus" that is in seven-four time. Whether it be the opening medium-tempo blues "Little Monster," the passionate "The Hope," "Only to Depart" (which has sections in ten-four sandwiching the main part of the performance), the intense "E-Motion" (which starts in five-four before becoming a more conventional four-four for the blowing sections) or the likable "Until Then," this is a stimulating and swinging set that is easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
