Performer Notes
  • Producers: Jacob Hellner, Carl-Michael Herloffson.
  • Rammstein's first album was about what was to be expected from a bunch of Germans who happily grew up on everything from Skinny Puppy to Depeche Mode to Laibach and back again, not to mention plenty of skull-crushing metal straight up. Precisely brutal and often brilliantly arranged -- the band aren't per se inventive, but they bring everything together to make something astonishingly radio-friendly out of something that isn't necessarily -- HERZELEID in particular is the logical conclusion of KMFDM's self-referential electro-metal. The band freely invokes its own name throughout the way that group did in its songs -- the final tune is called "Rammstein," to top it all off -- and the riffs readily connect the dots between the older band's clipped guitar bursts and their even more compressed nu-metal equivalents. The swaggering sass and stomp of "Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen" makes for a near-perfect start, and from there the band merrily -- without a smile on its collective face -- has a great, loud-as-hell time. The downside is that the formula is in some ways so perfected they don't vary it much -- verses with roiling basses and stomping drums, cascading feedback apocalypse and sometimes squelchy samples adding textures and beats as needed. But there's more there than might be guessed -- the sternly beautiful choruses on "Der Meister," soothing keyboards suggesting a "we all march forward!" anthem for the modern day, the nods toward jungle/drum'n'bass on songs like "Asche zu Asche," the full-on goth/Depeche-into-metal love of "Heirate Mich" and "Laichzeit." Then there's "Seemann," a power ballad actually worthy of the name, the type of song sung looking out over the Baltic Sea as the sun sets and you contemplate angst to the nth degree. If you're going to go, go big. ~ Ned Raggett

This is raw Rammstein, their first ever album that just so happened to be their claim-to-fame. Excellent guitar riffs, although sometimes they drag out for as long as 24 bars (or about 1:30 minutes at Rammsteins quick pace). The
under-riding techno themes could be better, but are still great to listen to. This album is the one release of Rammstein that truly fits the self-branded style "tanzmetall" or dance-metal. Some explosive tracks, such as Der Meister and Weisses Fleisch are contradicted by the techno-style Du Riechst So Gut and the extremely soft Seemann. The closer, Rammstein (a tribute to the airshow disaster that the band is named after) is very monotonous in both guitar (albeit explosive) and lyrics, which seem to be running at half-speed. However, the song is almost hypnotic, and means that you will not forget the name "rumm-STINE". A very good album. Not excellent, but very good. Would rate 4.5 if the site allowed.

This is Rammstein in their element: pounding music, good rhythms, excellent sounds and tight musicianship, (I am not sure that is a word). This contains some of the songs that made Rammstein popular outside Germany, and it is not hard to see why. The music is pure industrial metal, and would appeal to anyone looking for electronic musics fused with a bit of hardness.

When Rammstein first came out it blew everyone away, including the competition in industrial metal. Slow like Doom Metal, but not quite as deep, it had killer riffs and perfect drumming. Being German, the vocals are too, but after listening for awhile you don't even think of it. For fans of the other albums, this is a must have.

German hard rock. Herzleid doesn't mean Flowering Manlyland does it? That is certainly the impression you get here, from the cover, as though you take, Bill, Ben, and a few of their more well oiled cousins from Flower Pot land, and show them when they are in their full and unmistakable well toned bloom.

Rammsteins best and heaviest albums, I still quite enjoy this (while not being much of a fan of the genre). The riffs here arent bad and the vocals are pretty good. the drumming is half decent and overall this gets a six out of ten. Any nu metal fans would like this one, one of their more influential albums.

Now this is one good CD. This is the Debut CD from Rammstein. this CD will have you rocking to the Raw and untamed vocals of Till Lindemann and jumping around to the pulsating beats all night. You will not tire out of this CD and will find it will have a home in your CD player for many weeks.
