Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Dorothy Dillard, Anita Kerr, The Anita Kerr Singers, William Wright, Louis Dean Nunley (vocals); Chet Atkins, Hank Garland (guitar); Jimmy Day (steel guitar); Floyd Cramer (piano); Buddy Harman (vibraphone).
  • A crooner really closer to Perry Como in delivery and style than to Hank Williams, Jim Reeves' smooth vocals and archetypal string-enriched Nashville sound production made him a poster boy for the pop aspirations of country music in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and he did it all so well that he was still charting hits six years after his 1964 death in a plane crash. This double-disc set collects his first four albums for RCA, 1956's Singing Down the Lane and Bimbo, 1957's Jim Reeves and the concept album, 1958's Girls I Have Known, throwing in a pair of bonus tracks on each of the two discs. It adds up to a lot of Reeves, probably way more than the casual listener would ever need, but for deeper fans, this is a great way to get the early stuff. ~ Steve Leggett
