Performer Notes
  • Of the many hippy rock bands in late-'60s America, Sweet Smoke had an interesting story. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Sweet Smoke relocated to Germany and members also spent time in India. German recording engineer Conny Plank, who went on to collaborate with iconic electronica pioneers Cluster, recorded them. JUST A POKE, from 1970, was Sweet Smoke's debut, a kaleidoscopic mixture of jam-y West Coast rock (Santana, Grateful Dead), flower-power folk (Donovan) and freewheeling jazz improvisations. Consisting solely of two long songs, POKE is a dandy example of the mellower, chilled-out side of psychedelic jam-land. 1973's DARKNESS TO LIGHT contains two long and four short tracks, the latter reflecting the influences of early `70s melodic progressive rock (think Kansas, Jethro Tull). The two longer selections reflect inspirations from Indian music and fusion jazz.
