  • After working with producer Mitchell Froom and engineer Tchad Blake on KIKO, David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos decided to form a separate entity they dubbed the Latin Playboys. Setting themselves free to explore every studio possibility at hand, this debut is a glorious coming together of a traditionalist's sense of place combined with a surrealist's quest for dreams (or perhaps a dreamer's quest for surreality).
  • The songs are firmly rooted in the Los Lobos member's Mexican-American background, but they've been chopped and fragmented down to an essential core. The mix is full of extremes--quiet instruments can be in your face, while loud ones bellow from another room. The overall effect sets everything on its head without ever losing its sense of direction. This is what it sounds like when you mix one hundred years from now with one hundred years ago. It sounds front-and-center, right now.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (6/16/94, p.109) - 3 1/2 Stars - Good Plus - "...an expansive meld of R&B, Tex Mex, rock, soul and blues that is cinematic in scope....In some ways LATIN PLAYBOYS is reminiscent of Dylan and the Band's BASEMENT TAPES because it showcases new musical ideas as possibilities....LATIN PLAYBOYS is a raw jewel of pure groove..."

Spin (4/94, p.94) - "...sweet and sour guitars, slurpy Beefheartian swamp riffs, languid keyboard atmospheres and tinkly pianos, and high-voltage sonic memories just out of reach..."

Option (8/94, p.109) - "...Wonderfully simple hooks float over a murky, layered ground of transmissions from some subconcious Latin radio station. Snippets of what could be '40s Latin big bands shuffle along, voices drop in and out, and electric guitar solos hang with no purpose..."

Musician (5/94, p.71) - "...Evocative as all get-out and sometimes quite beautiful, these humble songs allude to ancient mysteries without displaying the cornier flourishes of lesser Lobos efforts, instead spreading the mood gently, like a benign fog..."

Village Voice (2/28/95) - Ranked #27 in the Village Voice's 1994 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.
