Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Thomas Brenneck (guitar, piano, organ, vibraphone, bass instrument, drums, drum, sound effects); Leon Michels (flute, tenor saxophone, piano, organ, congas); Cochemea Gastelum (flute); Dave Guy (trumpet); Aaron Johnson (trombone); Micahael Deller (piano); Toby Pazner (vibraphone, unknown instrument); Nick Movshon (bass instrument, drums, drum); Bosco Mann (bass instrument); Homer Steinweiss (drums, drum).
  • Audio Mixer: Thomas Brenneck.
  • Recording information: 250 Menahan Street, Brooklyn, NY.
  • The Menahan Street Band (named for the Brooklyn street where they recorded) is something of a New York funk/soul-scene supergroup, featuring members of Sharon Jones's Dap-Kings, Antibalas, and the Budos Band. The breezy-but-groovy sound on their debut album mixes the kind of soul-jazz, R&B, and Afro-funk influences you'd expect, considering the members' histories, but the evocative feel of their instrumental compositions gives the MSB an identity all their own.
Professional Reviews
Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he emphasis is on authenticity, paying tribute without pastiching, educating without preaching....They transplant atmospheric reggae-flecked funk to Isaac Hayes' mean streets of Harlem, then add mesmeric deep jazz."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] mesmeric instrumental soundtrack for both the mind and the feet."

Clash (Magazine) (p.98) - "[A] flourishing instrumental jazz and funk record that could easily be the soundtrack to any Tarantino gangster-centric movie. Full of warm and breezy tones..."

The Fader (p.154) - "MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING is filled with untouched palettes waiting to be sampled..."
