Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Maruta Miki, Yoko Nishi (koto); Rieko Suzuki (violin); K“ Ishikawa (sho).
  • Liner Note Author: Mamoru Fujieda.
  • Recording information: Jiyugakuen Myonichikan, Tokyo, Japan.
  • A contemporary classical composer from Japan, Mamoru Fujieda fashions music literally based on nature--in this case, plants--and a confluence of Eastern and Western musical traditions as well as acoustic and electronic media. PATTERNS is scored for koto (a huge, dulcimer-like instrument), sho (a Japanese mouth organ), and violin, and it exists seemingly in its own space, where the sustained tones of minimalism overlap with the stark beauty of Japanese folk forms. Cutting-edge yet warm, complex yet intimate, PATTERNS OF PLANTS II is a provocative and enchanting gem.
