If you were to listen to a '60s Manfred Mann tune (say, the feel-good hit "Do Wah Diddy Diddy") and compare it to the Earth Band's '70s progressive output ("Blinded by the Light"), you could easily be fooled into thinking there were two different men named Mann. But the keyboardist's musical growth blues-pop rockers to more complex sounds didn't just happen overnight; it can be detected on such albums as 1973's MESSIN', which serves as a bridge between old-school Mann and the new regime. The album-opening title track and "Get Your Rocks Off" border both musically and lyrically on blues-based hard rock (a la Mountain), while the textured guitar work of "Cloudy Eyes" showed that the band was trying to branch out.
