Fans who were worried that the addition of a guitarist would negatively affect Big Business need not have worried. Becoming a trio for their third album, MIND THE DRIFT, has only given the burly band more weapons to play with. Opener "Found Art" rumbles with a cascade of drums like an army coming over a hillside before some of singer Jared Warren's most melodic vocals soar in. Warren and drummer Coady Willis have both been performing as part of legendary sludge-rockers the Melvins, and the extra work has honed their chops, resulting in very tight songs with more sophisticated structures. Granted, Big Business is still industrial-strength heavy, but the winding solos at the start of "Cats, Mice" are a new touch made possible by the band's experience and the addition of another musician's input. Big Business makes a big noise still, but there's a little more color to it.
