Swedish tenor saxophonist Tomas Franck mixes together the influences of John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and Wayne Shorter in his post-bop style. Joined by an American rhythm section that he had only met the day before, Franck sounds pretty strong on four of his originals and four jazz standards, sounding a bit like Dexter Gordon on "Vierd Blues." Franck in 1990 did not possess his own voice on the tenor, but his technique was excellent and he holds one's interest during his complex solos. Pianist Mulgrew Miller co-stars while bassist Peter Washington and drummer Billy Drummond sound excellent in support. The music often swings hard and is sometimes quite fiery (particularly on "Restless") while rarely losing sight of each song's theme. Although Franck didn't become well known in jazz, this is an impressive if slightly derivative debut. ~ Scott Yanow
