Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar, piano). It's widely reported that by the time Nick Drake got around to recording his third and final album, PINK MOON, his already-precarious mental/emotional state had drastically deteriorated. In a deep depression, Drake recorded a brace of solo acoustic tunes, dropped the tape off unannounced at the label's office one day, and that was the last the world at large ever heard of Drake's music. The results of those solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, Drake recorded PINK MOON's dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. The most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably "Parasite," a visceral-but-mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succour, with Drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering,"take a look, you may see me in the dirt." This was the end of the road for Nick Drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters subsequently inspired by his bleak-but-beautiful visions.

Ok folk music. Guitar not too plinky, singing not too hippy-silly. Interesting deeper voice. Or you could look at this from the pessimistic rather than the optimistic angle. Then you would say, very ordinary folk music type sound that is different enough to not be horribly painful, or make you want to turn it off immediately when it is stumbled across.

This was Nick Drake's last album before he tragically committed suicide and is filled with folk music of a standard that was well before its time. This, his third masterpiece album, is equal in its beauty and its brilliance to his previous two albums, which I recommend you buy before buying this one. This is a truly magnificent album and should be apart of any avid music listener's collection.

Nick Drake is one of those people who were born into a time that everyone else wasn't ready for them, his music is more loved now than it was then and hopefully that's a sign that things are on the improbe because quite frankly Nick Drake's music is outstanding and Pink Moon is no different to that.

If you like Iron and Wine, Bright Eyes, Bonnie "prince" Billy, Willy Mason you will love Nick Drake and while this was the last release while Nick Drake was alive it is by no means his least.

Nick Drake was an astounding musican who has left behind timeless music.
