  • Still best known for his tenure in the pioneering post-punk art rockers Japan (as the drummer behind his brother, frontman David Sylvian; the family name is actually Batt), Steve Jansen has maintained a solid working relationship with his former bandmates, having worked with Sylvian, bassist Mick Karn, and keyboardist Richard Barbieri on various projects since the band's 1983 split. SLOPE is Jansen's first solo album, featuring contributions from his brother, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Joan Wasser (aka Joan As Policewoman), and others on 12 solidly constructed but delicate art-pop songs.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.70) - "Jansen contributes a philharmonic's worth of rhythm, riff and color to the song -- and does it all like he's passing through in a cloud of dust."

The Wire (p.59) - "[A] one-man show of multitracked dexterity. As well as drums, percussion and sampling, his pan-instrumental virtuosity stretched to playing guitars, piano, Rhodes and string arrangements."

The Wire (p.35) - Included in The Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2007".

Record Collector (magazine) (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "This is an intoxicating record, moving and emotional in all the right places."
