Performer Notes
  • Features mixes by King Tubby.
  • Personnel includes: King Tubby, Delroy Wilson, Jim Brown, Badoo, Prince Pompidou, Calvin Stuart, Desmond Irie, Larry Marshall, The Gladiators.
  • Recorded at Channel One Studios, Kingston, Jamaica between 1973 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Geoff Parker.
  • Digitally remastered by Mike Coe (Motion Studios).
  • This generous two-CD collection of rare recordings features the work of both established and lesser-known reggae figures, but the real star is King Tubby, the studio innovator and remixing master who is credited with inventing the dub style. At Jamaica's Channel One studio, King Tubby perfected the "version," an alternate take in which he deconstructed songs, added layers of reverb and echo, and stripped the vocals down to a few phrases, leaving the song's essential rhythm to form the basis of the new track.
  • Each song here is presented in its original version and in the King Tubby remix. The songs capture a vital transition in reggae, from the politicized roots-rock of the mid-'70s to the less edgy, more fun-loving dancehall style that succeeded it. It gives listeners the chance to check out much-loved reggae crooners Delroy Wilson and Leroy Smart (both referenced in the Clash's punk-reggae classic "White Man in Hammersmith Palais") as well as more obscure but no less talented singers from this bygone era.
