  • Coleman Hawkins is the undisputed father of the modern jazz saxophone. While others, namely Sidney Bechet, were playing soprano sax in the years prior to Hawkins's arrival on the scene, it was Hawkins who originally popularized the tenor sax. Unfortunately, by the time this album was recorded, Hawkins had fallen out of favor with many of the younger players who had long since turned their attention to Lester Young; the latter's sound had come to represent modernism while Hawkins's approach was emblematic of an earlier generation.
  • On this disc, however, we hear the legendary saxophonist in a setting that shows both his swing roots and his successful attempts to play in a more modern style. The band's lineup encourages this diversity. Trumpeter Joe Thomas mines a more old-school lode, while pianist Tommy Flanagan plays in a bebop vein. Hawkins himself seems to ride down the middle, making for an interesting mix of approaches. Highlights include "I'm Beginning To See The Light" with its buoyant swing, and the bebop-inflected "Some Stretching."
