Performer Notes
  • Tegan And Sara: Tegan Quin, Sara Quin (vocals, acoustic guitar).
  • Tegan and Sara: Tegan and Sara (vocals, guitar); Hawksley Workman (guitar, harmonica, piano, keyboards, drum).
  • Personnel: Karl Mohr (keyboards, drum programming).
  • Originally released in 2000, when identical twins Tegan and Sara Quinn were only 19 years old, THIS BUSINESS OF ART is the album that most reveals the sisters' folk-rock roots. Like a younger, hipper Indigo Girls, THIS BUSINESS OF ART updates the singer-songwriter folk-rock of the 1970s for the indie generation, adding sardonic commentary and a more overt political subtext to largely acoustic songs like the defiant "Proud." Other highlights include "All You Got," "More For Me," and the wryly ironic album closer, "Superstar." After the closure of the sisters' original label, THIS BUSINESS OF ART was reissued in 2007 in a basically identical package.

CMJ (7/24/00, p.24) - "...Wise beyond their years. Their songs are agitated and angst-ridden, and feature barbed lyrics, percussive guitar and sassy lead vocals..."

First saw these girls at Groove in the Moo in Townsville, so I thought I would try out a couple of their CD's and this one didn't disappoint. Very catchy tunes, probably class it as indy pop. Great Harmonies, as one of the girls takes the lead and at times the other sister talks her lyrics in a couple of songs which makes for great listening. My favourite tracks are The First, Hype and More for Me. One of those albums you will know from the first listening whether you will like it. Good Stuff if you like indy pop

this is the first album from tegan and sara, and compared to their others, you can really tell! its still a great buy if yuo are a fan of these two canadians, but compared to their more recent albums, its a bit lacking in excitement and lyrical content, it fails to connect some of the time. many of the songs are still great tho, and its a good buy if you want to hear more from these talented twins.
