  • Duke Ellington is a great composer, bandleader and pianist, but some people forget his success as an entertainer. This collection spans the years 1935-1964, showing a fine cross-section of what Ellington was capable of, and is programmed to approximate what the band's dance-concert live set would be (some of these tracks were recorded live at dances.) For the slow dances, there's the winsome, melancholy "Autumn Leaves" and the elegant "Willow Weep For Me." For fast dancing, there's "Take The 'A' Train." This set features plenty of fine, rich, blues-tinged soloing throughout, especially from Johnny Hodges (alto sax). If you want to hear standards done with heart instead of a gee-ain't-we-hip attitude (as with much of the neo-lounge/swing set), this collection is the place to start.
