A mesmerising piece of evil black metal, Darkthrone's 'Transilvanian Hunger' is a shining example of artistic minimalism. Those of you who are not prepared to endure the hypnotic repetition of around 40 minutes of constant tremolo-picked guitars and blast-beats, this album is not for you. But for the adventurous listener, this disc represents one of the purest, darkest, richest pieces of art to be found in all of Black Metal.

F*ck Emperor, Darkthrone are the best black metal band. A lot of people don't care for the minimalist and bad quality aspects of this album, but they are usually dorks who prefer keyboards in black metal. This is the most blackest sounding metal I have ever heard, Fenriz is awesome, he really has a great understanding of what black metal is, they are virtually the only band who have stayed true to the ethics of black metal. This album is very harsh, it sounds so black and evil, you will not get any better than this. YOU MUST BUY THIS

A very influential album, the song: "Transilvanian Hunger" should be the Black Metal National Anthem (it pretty much is, with the best main riff i've ever heard). The vocals are great, the lyrics are great. The under-production makes it sound darker (as if it was recorded during a blizzard or something). An essential for any black metal fan.

what were these guys thinking?

I wanted some good quality black metal and bought this straight away. I was wrong to do so, this is the worst production I have ever heard (especially on "Transylvanian Hunger"). It would be a pretty decent album if they produced it better (they are able to, as they make alot of money). The guitar riffs are good, the vocals and drumming are good, but without good production this album seriously fails.
