  • Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious to go back to spare-changing). While they are initially presented as another entrant in the aggro-rock sweepstakes, there's a bit more than that to the Used. Sure, McCracken can let out blood-curdling screams of angst with the best of them, and there's no shortage of blazing guitars and pounding drums, but the Used seem to have spent at least as much time listening to Jane's Addiction as they have to the Deftones. The band's range is made most clear by the acoustic-guitar-and-strings ballad "On My Own" and the melodic piano motif at the end of the closing song "Pieces Mended."

Professional Reviews
Q (1/03, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...McCracken's strangulated wail kicks off a series of surprisingly subtle songs that come charging in like screaming thrash metal....A crafted, full-throttle debut..."

CMJ (7/15/02, p.16) - "...This band's passionate performances will likely be too alluring for even the most stringent metal and hardcore fans to ignore....McCracken seesaws between throat-searing shrieks and high notes that are as smooth as a baby's fat chushy ass..."

This album by the used is an essential must have for all the emos out there! Bert's awesome voice lets out a lot of anger in the songs and the overall mood of the album is dark. The used are truly an awesome band with their own unique emo sound not like the emo "copycat" bands that we see so much of on TV these days. This is a brilliant album and if you like this one follow it up with their love and death album which is even better :)

Lots of love for this album. Lots of love for The Used. Brilliant album. Lots of great angsty songs and some pretty slow ones too. My personal favourite from the album would have to be The Taste Of Ink and A Box Full Of Sharp Objects. Pick up The Used if you lik bands that don't sounds like anyone else going right now.

this is a pretty dark album from the used, with songs called things like Bulemic, but it is still brilliant stuff. loads of dark emo songs on here to really enjoy, and all of them sound different and unique. these guys are one of the original emo bands out there, and for that reason this album is a must own. i love the song Say Days Ago and its haunting quality.

This Album from The Used is absolutly fantastic! Its is my personal favourite with some of their best songs, even though it was released in 2002 each song is so unique and never seem to get old even when you put it on repeat! I would give this album a easy 8/10.

another wicked used cd. the lead singer used to go out with kelly osbourne, little known fact. some really wicked songs on here, will really make any used fan happy. released in 2002, this is some of their older stuff, which is still really good to listen to and enjoy. this is a must have if you are a fan of theirs!
