For hardcore Slim Gaillard fans, first things first: there isn't anything here you haven't heard before. Between the Chronological Classics series and the various compilations from Universal and Sony, it's all been released in various -- and sometimes contradictory -- forms. The recordings on these two discs include the four-track EP shown on the bottom right of the cover, the 20-cut, 1956 MGM-issued Smorgasbord..... Help Your Self date, Rides Again from 1958, and Slim & Bam's Opera en Vout EP, and all parts of the "Groove Juice Symphony" and a boatload of singles, from "Flat Foot Floogier" to "Walkin' and Cookin' Blues." In total, there are 52 tracks of pure, hophead, swinging jazz-blues and jump madness peppered with fine versions of standards. This is an excellent introduction to one of the wildest jazz wizards of the era.
