Performer Notes
  • Emperor (Black Metal): Ihsahn (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Samoth (guitar); Tchort (bass instrument); Faust (drums).
  • Displaying much more emotional range than many of its contemporaries, In the Nightside Eclipse combines black metal's noisy fury with synth arrangements and dark, haunting medieval chords and melodies, thus evoking moods of sorrow and loneliness. Awash in pagan imagery, the album was recorded in the Memorial Hall of Edvard Grieg for additional atmosphere, indicative of the record's ambition and of the band's willingness to experiment and push the limits of the death metal genre. In fact, In the Nightside Eclipse, although not quite as complex or accessible as its follow-up, is arguably the definitive Norwegian black metal album. ~ Steve Huey

Emperor are widely credited as being one of the originators of the second wave of black metal, and this album is a credit to that. Though remastered, the original album had "a very necro sound, and nothing was done to hide that", as stated by the band. Therefore, the quality of it is improved, while not sacrificing any of the original atmosphere of the album. A quality find, and a very solid black metal release, an essential for any fan of the genre.

The first full length Emperor release and easily their best effort ever. This albums is widely regarded as a classic "first wave" blackmetal release and is THE album that jettisoned Ihsahn and the boys to blackmetal superstardom. Pretty much every song on this album is a classic atmospheric blackmetal song with standouts being "I am the Black wizards" , "Inno a satana" and my personal favorite "Towards the pantheon". A MUST HAVE in everyones collection. The cover art here is for the Wrath of the tyrant release???

The first album by black metal legends Emperor, this is what every black metal band should sound like. Every song here is well made, very dark and evil stuff. The guitar riffs are heavy, the vocals are really good and the drumming is nicely timed. The keyboards add a much darker atmosphere to this music.
