Chamois live in the entire Alps region, as well as in parts of the Balkans and the Carpathian mountains. They are even found in Caucasia and Anatolia. The goat-antelope prefers to stay in the upper forest belt, but in the summer it often ventures further into the mountains. Whenever it is too disturbed further down, it disappears into the least accessible areas, from where it can visit the grassy outcrops between the rocks as day breaks. During the winter it retreats further into the woods.
