This kit is for the serious scientist in your family. It takes patience, interest, and some work to set up this procedure for growing crystals in your home, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Crystal growers will need a room that has a fairly constant temperature where the crystals can grow undisturbed. They'll also need help from parents boiling and pouring water. (Aluminium pans will not work.) It takes three to four days to complete the process. Nine different crystals can be grown with this kit. Sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, the kit is chock full of scientific information. Not only will young scientists learn about crystals, they'll get a chance to keep lab records and produce elegant experiments. Because some chemicals enclosed are hazardous, the kit should be used only under adult supervision. --Lee Strucker
