The C-97 evolved from the very successful B-29A, but the C-97 was larger in every way allowing for the transport of more men and material for longer distances carrying more weight. The C-97 was first deployed during the earliest confrontation of the Cold War, the Soviet blockade of occupied West Berlin in 1947. The western powers were determined to supply Berlin by air and not risk a ground assault on the Red Army. After the arrival of the massive C-97 transport the Soviets gave up hopes of forcing the west to abandon West Berlin.
