1 Derivation of the basic embedding method. 2 Applications to the electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces. 3 Application to confined electron systems. 4 Embedding in electromagnetism. 5 Relation of the embedding potential to self-energies. 6 Embedding and the R-matrix method. 7 Time-dependent embedding. 8 Embedding correlated systems - the way forward.
John Inglesfield Emeritus Professor of Physics at Cardiff University, UK. After a research fellowship at St John's College he moved to the Daresbury Laboratory joining the Theory and Computational Science Division, of which he became head in 1982. He subsequently moved to the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands) in 1989 as Professor of Electronic Structure of Materials, and finally moved to Cardiff University in 1995.
The embedding method was originally developed for calculating the
electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces, but its
flexibility has provided a powerful tool in many other areas of
physics. Here, John Inglesfield, who originated the method and has
been a pioneer in its usage, brings together the different aspects
of embedding and its applications. This authoritative text serves
both as an accessible starting point for graduate students and
researchers, and as an authoritative reference source for those
familiar with the technique.
This book provides a thorough review of the method and would be an
accessible starting point for graduate students or researchers.
