Historian Simon Schama presents this five-part BBC documentary series that traces over 4,000 years of Jewish history. In addition to tracing the Jewish experience from its birthplace in the ancient world of the Hebrew bible, the series also examines the contribution that Jewish people have made in shaping the modern world, through the legacy of their involvement in the arts, finance, culture, science and entertainment.
I found this very interesting.
There was a lot of things that I had never heard of before.
I found it constructed very well with each relevant part following another in a logical way
Once I started watching it I couldn't turn it off until the end, It really held my interest
Typical fast, reliable, great value service from Fishpond for a DVD I was not able to easily find locally. And we always want to support Fishpond over Amazon so it is doubly satisfying. Thank you Fishpond!
I hesitate to write this because I don't have time to do The Story of the Jews justice, but it is brilliant! Readers and viewers familiar with Schama's scholarly precision and originality will not be surprised by the depth and range of the narrative. Of course it is informed by his family history and his Jewish identity. The production values are excellent, so this DVD is visually as well as culturally rich. Because Schama is somehow able to make complex historical and religious concepts accessible to non-Jewish viewers, and also because he doesn't shirk the hard questions about inter-faith conflict, this would be an excellent starting point for anyone keen to learn about the Jewish people through the ages, from the beginnings to the present.
