"In Their Time is quite a triumph of synthesis--an amazingly
reasonable, down-to-earth and highly readable survey of women's
activism on behalf of their sex, covering more than six centuries
and many nations." -- Nancy F. Cott, Sterling Professor of History
and American Studies, Yale University
"This ambitious, wide-ranging survey of feminisms in Western
societies raises provocative questions for readers of every
background and persuasion. Marlene Le Gates's thought-provoking
analysis of repeated challenges to sexual inequality and of the
overwhelming obstacles and scorn challengers confronted over many
centuries is guaranteed to provoke discussion and debate." -- Karen
Offen, Institute for Research on Women & Gender, Stanford
University
