Jan Greye grew up in the San Pernando Valley. After training horses, she moved to Los Angeles to train dogs. In 1984, she met Gail "Jesse" Smith, an animal lover from Portland, Oregon. They soon started Kritter Sitters, an innovative animal-care program specializing in dog care and training, and since then they've been helping dog owners raise the best-behaved puppies in Beverly Hills.
Greye and Smith are the cofounders of Kritter Sitters, a Beverly Hills-based dog-training business. But new puppy owners anticipating gossipy tidbits about the authors' exclusive and glamorous 90210 clientele will be disappointed. Anecdotes are sparse and rendered anonymously. Still, the authors offer solid information on selecting and raising a puppy, with the requisite warnings about pet store dogs and puppy mills. Chapters are organized by puppy developmental stages, with a concluding chapter of dog resources. There is some breed-specific material, too. The attitude recommended toward all dogs is indulgent, loving, and consistent. However, readers looking for in-depth behavioral insights will do better with Judith Halliburton's Raising Rover (LJ 6/15/96), and libraries seeking a comprehensive dog-care book should examine Dogs: The Ultimate Care Guide, edited by Matthew Hoffman (Rodale, 1998).
