DAVID J. RUSSO is Professor of History at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Since the early 1970s he has tried to reconceptualize American history from an outsider's perspective. To this end he has written Keepers of Our Past: Local Historical Writing in the United States, 1820s to 1920s (Greenwood, 1988) and Clio Confused: Troubling Aspects of Historical Study from the Perspective of U.S. History (Greenwood, 1995).
