This comprehensive handbook provides background information and analysis on the full range of contemporary ocean use issues. Covers the development of ocean law, the evolving uses of oceans, data on living and non-living ocean resources, the environmental impact of pollution, and competing national claims over ocean exploration.
JAMES C.F. WANG is Professor of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He has published a number of books on contemporary Chinese and Asian politics. He is a member of the Law of the Sea Institute and the Council on Ocean Law.
?This thorough compendium covers a wide range of ocean affairs
topics including a global overview of the physical features of the
oceans, a survey of international conferences on the law of the
sea, living and nonliving resources of the ocean and their economic
and political management, ocean environmental protection and
pollution prevention, military uses of the ocean, navigation and
transportation, and marine scientific research. A discussion of
each topic is followed by a section on its significance, in which
Wang, a professor of political science and author of Ocean Politics
and Law: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood, 1991), expresses his
own opinions and summarizes those of other scholars. Numerous maps,
figures, charts, and tables are included (not seen). Each chapter
is followed by bibliographical references, and a select
bibliography and seven appendixes appear at the end. As the only
one on the topic, it would also be useful as a one-volume source
for collections that do not own monographs on specific aspects of
maritime law. Suitable for collections in marine affairs, marine
science, political science, and law. Written with intelligence and
clarity, this handbook should prove a useful addition to
oceanography reference book collections.?-Library Journal Reference
