...a masterly reference work that provides accurate, accessible
information on an impressively comprehensive range of new religions
and alternative spiritualities. Anyone interested in the study of
contemporary religion will find this volume, as I have done, an
invaluable resource.
*Christopher Partridge, Professor of Contemporary Religion,
University College, Chester, England*
The book is quite comprehensive and I have found it to be very
useful and accurate quick reference for basic information on almost
every new religious group, leader, and idea that I looked up and
much more...I strongly recommend it as a useful quick reference
work for interested scholars and all university/college
students.
*Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses*
This is a paperbound reprint of a 2001 book published as Historical
Dictionary of New Religious Movements. Chryssides (religious
studies, U. of Wolverhampton, England) presents this resource
volume of new religious movements dating from the mid-1700s to
2000. Included are entries for approximately 400 religions—and
separate entries for many of the founders—from throughout the
world. The author focuses on origins, beliefs and practices, and
seeks to convey a sense that each of the NRMs contains a definite
train of thought and internal coherence.
