About the Author

Carol A. Chapelle is distinguished professor of liberalarts and sciences and professor of TESL/applied linguistics at IowaState University, USA. Her research explores issues at theintersection of computer technology and applied linguistics. Herbooks on technology and language include Computer Applicationsin Second Language Acquisition (2001), English LanguageLearning and Technology (2003), and Tips for Teaching WithCALL (2008, with Joan Jamieson). Her books focusing on languageassessment and research methods include Assessing LanguageThrough Computer Technology (2006, with Dan Douglas),Inference and Generalizability in Applied Linguistics (2006,coedited with Micheline Chalhoub-Deville and Patricia Duff),ESOL Tests and Testing (2005, with Stephen Stoynoff), andBuilding a Validity Argument for the Test of English as aForeign Language (2008, coedited with Mary K. Enright and JoanJamieson). She is coeditor of the Cambridge AppliedLinguistics series. She is past president of the AmericanAssociation for Applied Linguistics (2006 7) and formereditor of TESOL Quarterly (1999 2004). She was awardedthe 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award in Language Testing by theUniversity of Cambridge and International Language TestingAssociation and the 2012 Samuel J. Messick Memorial Lecture Awardby Educational Testing Service.

Overall, this is a remarkable work. It is useful andrigorous. If you thought you already knew what AL does then browseit; you might have to think again. I am in no doubt that this willremain the standard work for years to come and the benchmarkagainst which new works will be judged.
