Butler was a major moralist, a philosopher of religion second only
to Hume, and a great churchman. It is more than a century since
there has been a scholarly edition of his complete writings.
Congratulations to the University of Rochester Press for giving us
this fine one now, and to David White for editing it with such
sympathy and care. --Terence Penelhum, Professor Emeritus of
Religious Studies, University of Calgary.
