Reviews

McKay's Building Construction should be on the desk of everyone involved with the repair and maintenance of buildings using the construction methods it contains. Journal of Architectural Conservation The detail - and detail is the word - contained here is as up-to-date as when WB wrote and drew it in his Manchester study more than 60 years ago... This book is from another world. Ecclesiastical & Heritage World McKay's is the modern construction manual, logically set out, with succinct and practical text, and beautifully clear detailed drawings... For readers who need a crash course on traditional building construction, or lack a useful book on the subject, McKay's is the one. Context In bringing out this facsimile edition Donhead has performed a valuable service for all building conservation practitioners. The production of this work is a major achievement and a key influence and source of inspiration on how we should view and treat our built heritage. Building Conservation Journal For some, this book will be an old acquaintance from student days, dipped into as the need arises. But for those educated in more recent years, its drawings and references to traditional materials seem to speak of a bygone era. For those who ... have to deal with the stock of late 19th-and 20th-century buildings, there is a wealth of useful details on many subjects. For those who do not have the early editions of McKay's, or have no time to scour second-hand bookshops, this will be a good resource SPAB Cornerstone
