Gerald Friedman, a graduate of the University of Cape Town, joined the Cape Bar in January 1950. He took silk on 7 April 1970, and was chairman of the Cape Bar Council in 1975 and 1976, also serving as vice-chairman of the General Council of the Bar in 1976. Appointed a judge of the Cape Provincial Division on 1 August 1977, he was elevated to the Appellate Division on 1 October 1990. He returned to the CPD as judge president - with Andrew Beyers and Theo van Wyk one of three Cape AD judges in the period to do so - on 1 February 1992. He served as judge president until 31 October 1998. On his retirement he served on the Courts of Appeal of both Botswana and Lesotho. From 1999 to 2010 he also chaired the Financial Services Appeal Board. Jeremy Gauntlett sc, Beit Scholar, Stellenbosch; Rhodes Scholar, Oxford, and Harvard Graduate Fellow, commenced practice at the Cape Bar on 3 January 1977, taking silk on 20 February 1989. He served two terms as chairman of the Cape Bar Council (1997-9), and three as chairman of the General Council of the Bar (1999-2002). From 1996 to 2010 he was a judge of the Court of Appeal of Lesotho. In 2012 he was made a Bencher of the Middle Temple.
