For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome ordinary parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to thirteen-year-old Kenneth, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS and gives advice on how better to understand 'Planet Asperger'. This book helps parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.

'This book is brilliant. I've read it through, re-read sections and still want to pick it up and dip into it. The approach is very refreshing - easy to read, practical and realistic... So many parents are going to breathe a sigh of relief when they read this book.' - Julie Connell, Educational Psychologist

I loved this book. Recommendation enough is the cover, where you can see the happy, loving relationship between Brenda and her son. It was great to read advice from a parent rather than a professional (as important as the professionals are!). Brenda has 'been there' and her advice is fantastic. But as well as the practical strategies, perhaps most importantly I gained a real 'big-picture' insight into the role I can play as my son's advocate, and how home should be his 'safe place'. Our relationship has improved leaps and bounds since I read this book, and his anxiety levels have improved out of sight. As a result, he has gone from being frustrated, angry and depressed (diagnosed), with every day a struggle for all of us, to being a much happier and more affectionate child. He is increasing in his confidence to cope with the outside world (school etc) because he feels loved and secure at home. Feeling happier and more secure, and starting to achieve small successes, he is then more open to those 'teaching' moments ... rather than being constantly angry and 'closed' to discussion. So it's a 'virtuous cycle' where he continues to improve. I can't recommend higher.
