Mujyo is a watercolour artist and lover of cats. He spent 20 years training as a Zen monk and decided one day to bring together Zen and his love of cats and painting. Working in a combination of watercolour and Sumi ink, Tobochan was realized. "I'm not hoping to write a book primarily about Zen, though there is a lot of Zen in it and Tobo's life is deeply connected to his monk friend. They share a journey into life, which is what Zen is, and is not. I hope some people will read it because they like Cats, Zen, and pictures, or all of the above. Anything is OK. I think there is a personality that cats have, individual like humans, they are fuzzy people. I think Tobo has his, we can feel that, also there's an undercurrent which is Zen. Thats Zen, an undercurrent to things. Not really there at all. So Tobochan's encounters with Zen are not really Zen encounters. Just ordinary like you and I. There is the life of the temple Tobo has joined, his monk friend, and there is Tobo's life as a cat. How a cat sees."
