  • Recorded at the Paris Olympia during the 1986 ONCE UPON A TIME tour, the two-disc LIVE IN THE CITY OF LIGHT is a sprawling, sonically crystalline set detailing Simple Minds at their commercial peak. Many longtime fans of the band feel that their earliest albums, from 1979's LIFE IN A DAY through 1981's double SONS AND FASCINATION/SISTER FEELINGS CALL, are the Scottish group's best work, but other than a brief snippet of "Love Song" from 1980's EMPIRES AND DANCE in a medley, Jim Kerr and company ignore their early years entirely.
  • All of these 14 lengthy tracks come from the band's more commercially successful period, covering 1982's NEW GOLD DREAM, 1984's SPARKLE IN THE RAIN and 1985's ONCE UPON A TIME, plus of course the hit single "Don't You (Forget About Me)." The performances are superb, but reworkings of earlier gems like "I Travel" would have been fascinating.
