“Demian became . . . a voice I could listen to and contemplate as I
tried to find my way from childhood to adulthood and into the world
of art.” —James Franco, from the Foreword
“Demian by Hermann Hesse [was my favorite book growing up]. Of all
the protagonists, Sinclair appealed to me because of his
introspective nature and lack of confidence.” —Mieko Kawakami,
author of Breasts and Eggs and Heaven, in The Guardian
“[An] excellent new translation.” —The Times Literary Supplement
