Fred Urquhart (1912-1995) was born in Edinburgh, and is best known as a superb short story writer. Owen Dudley Edwards, who retired as Reader in American and Commonwealth History at the University of Edinburgh, is a critic, biographer and broadcaster as well as a historian. His work on Scottish writers, including 'The Quest for Sherlock Holmes', the innovative study of Arthur Conan Doyle, was recognised by an Honorary Fellowship of the Association for Scottish Literary Studies. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal Historical Society. His most recent book is 'British Children's Fiction in the Second World War.'
