Based on meticulous research and enlivened by fresh insights and new discoveries, the book is both an essential resource for students of architecture and history and a fascinating guide for anyone who cares about the city we live in now." -Leonard Garfield, executive director, Museum of History & Industry "Every major city should be so fortunate as to have a historical compendium of the architects who have given form and character to the urban landscape. Jeffrey Ochsner and his colleagues have prepared a book with enduring value as a means of fostering public appreciation of the built environment and this updated and expanded edition should prove no less valuable than the original volume was when it was published twenty years ago." -Richard Longstreth, George Washington University "What defines a city?
