Jilly Traganou skilfully handles the conceptual tools and terminology of geography, anthropology, art history, literary criticism, and the history of ideas. She has assembled a wide and evocative library of illustrative material, to which she makes regular reference in her text.? In the text Tokaido occupies centre stage, but quite a number of issues, which are larger or more universal, are discussed. For example, the issue of health as an important one for the Meiji Government is an excellent point not usually raised in this particular context. This is an important work, which would be useful not only for the scholars in architecture and landscape studies, but also to a wider circle.?
