The 27th of October 2013 will be the 70th anniversary of Operation Goodtime. The invasion of the Treasury Islands(in the Solomon Islands chain-south of Bougainville) and its siezure from its Japanese occupiers was one of three major actions undertaken by the soldiers of 3NZ Division yet it is all but unknown to the general public. One of my purposes in writing this book was to make the contribution of those involved in Operation Goodtime more widely known & to give them long overdue recognition. I became aware of Operation Goodtime whist I was researching my doctoral thesis & I had the good fortune to be able to talk to some of those who took part. There are a number of threads to the story-the Islanders who hid Allied aircrew at great risk to themselves, the American aircrew & a New Zealand fighter pilot who evaded Japanese capture(and probable death),the Seabees (American naval construction specialists who built airfields & facilities) and fought shoulder to shoulder with the New Zealanders, the men of 8 Brigade,3NZ Division who carried out the first New Zealand opposed landing since Gallipoli & the doomed Japanese garrison who fought with desperation. I enjoyed writing this book and I hope you will enjoy reading this fascinating story.
