He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng., 1980)] from Bangalore University and Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering (M.S. 1981) and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering (Ph.D. 1984) from Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Srivatsan joined the faculty in The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron in August 1987. Since joining, he has instructed undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of (a) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes, (b) Mechanical Behavior of Materials, (c) Fatigue of Engineering Materials and Structures, (d) Fracture Mechanics, (e) Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering, (f) Mechanical Measurements, (g) Design of Mechanical Systems, and (h) Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. His research areas currently span the fatigue and fracture behavior of advanced materials to include monolithic(s), intermetallic, nanomaterials and metal-matrix composites; processing techniques for advanced materials and nanostructure materials; inter-relationship between processing and mechanical behavior; electron microscopy; failure analysis; and mechanical design. He has authored/edited/co-edited 60 books in areas crosspollinating mechanical design; processing and fabrication of advanced materials; deformation, fatigue and fracture of ordered intermetallic materials; machining of composites; failure analysis; and technology of rapid solidification processing of materials. He serves as co-editor of International Journal on Materials and Manufacturing Processes and on the editorial advisory board of journals in the domain of Materials Science and Engineering. He has delivered over 200 technical presentations at national and international meetings and symposia; technical/professional societies; and research and educational institutions. He has authored and co-authored over 700 technical publications in archival international journals, chapters in books, proceedings of national and international conferences, reviews of books, and technical reports. In recognition of his efforts, contributions and their impact on furthering science, technology and education he has been elected (a) Fellow of the American Society for Materials, International (ASM Int.); (b) Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); and (c) Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He has also been recognized as: (i) Outstanding Young Alumnus of Georgia Institute of Technology, (ii) Outstanding Research Faculty, the College of Engineering at The University of Akron, and (iii) Outstanding Research Faculty at The University of Akron. He offers his knowledge in research services to the U.S. Air Force and Navy), National Research Laboratories, and industries related to aerospace, automotive, power-generation, leisure-related products, and applied medical sciences.

Dr. T.S. Sudarshan obtained his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Metallurgy from Indian Institute of Technology Madras and completed his Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Materials Engineering Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), USA. Dr. Sudarshan is currently the President and CEO of Materials Modification Inc., which is at the forefront of research, development and commercialization of advanced materials utilizing novel processing techniques. He has demonstrated technological leadership for well over three decades, and has worked extensively throughout his career in the areas spanning nanotechnology and surface engineering for which he is very well known throughout the world. Through his leadership, he has raised over $60 million in funding for the primary purpose of very high-risk, high-payoff advanced technology related programs in several nontraditional areas. Dr. Sudarshan has published well over 175 plus peer reviewed papers and has edited 32 books in the areas spanning Surface Modification Technologies and Advanced Materials. He is editor of two international journals, Surface Engineering and Materials and Manufacturing Processes, and holds over 25 patents. He has chaired numerous committees for all federal agencies, chaired many committees of the Ohio Third Frontier, served as a member of the National Materials Advisory Board and Trustee of ASM International. In recognition of his efforts, contributions and impact on furthering science, technology and their far-reaching applications, he has been elected as: (a) Fellow of the American Society for Materials, International (ASM Int.); (b) Fellow of the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE), and (c) Fellow of the Institute of Materials. He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras).

Dr. K. Manigandan obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng. 2009) degree in Mechanical Engineering from SASTRA University, India and his Master of Science (M.S. 2011) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. 2014) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Akron, USA. Dr. Manigandan is presently Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron. He is the author of over 60 technical publications in archival journals, proceedings of national and international conferences, and technical reports. His research interests and expertise include failure and fracture analysis of materials across the broad spectrum of metals and the family of composites to include novel metal-matrix composites and high-performance ceramic matrix composites. His current research interest and involvement is the use of innovative testing techniques to understand the mechanical behavior of novel materials, spanning both engineering (metals) and engineered (composites) for use in performance critical applications in the aerospace industry.

Reviews

"The new trends in manufacturing techniques, and in particular additive manufacturing, have the potential to revolutionize the manufacturing industry. In these is also the challenge as the design will no longer only be the design of component, but also the internal structures of the material must be designed and be compliant with the component function. This puts the material in the center and the book puts the finger on this and by its content takes the first steps in lifting this to the potential readers."
— Anders E. W. Jarfors, Jönköping University, Sweden"Current, up to date and great detail for manufacturing materials along with excellent references."

— Anders E. W. Jarfors, Jönköping University, Sweden"The present book presents a blend of topics that are of immense importance to students and practitioners in the world of manufacturing. Latest trends in both the conventional and emerging manufacturing techniques are addressed which will be great interest to researchers, students and industry. Most of the chapters provides a review ensuring that the subject matter will be suitable even for a non‐specialist reader. It is certain that visibility of this book will be phenomenal as it provides a one‐stop learning for various topics related to manufacturing."—Manoj Gupta, Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore"…very informative collection of research articles and reviews that cover the state-of-the art technologies in manufacturing and materials. The book is a must to have as a reference material for scientists, engineers, academicians and at industries."-Sankaranarayanan Seetharaman, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore"Current, up to date and great detail for manufacturing materials along with excellent references."
